Start applying 3-6 months before your SIWES period begins. Popular organizations in Lagos receive many applications, so early applications have better chances of acceptance. Top companies like Shell, NNPC, and Dangote have strict deadlines and competitive selection processes.
Most organizations require: CV (saved as PDF) - create one for free, application letter, and school introduction letter. Some may also require your transcript. Before starting your training, you'll also need your SIWES Logbook - generate entries easily - and SCAF Form / ITF Form 8. Check each organization's page for specific requirements.
Physical visits are often more effective. Use the organization's address, email, or WhatsApp (if available) to contact them. Visit their physical location when possible, bringing all necessary documents from your institution. For online applications, apply ahead of time and send a professional email request (see sample letter below). Apply to multiple companies (10-15 organizations) to increase your chances. Browse organizations above, view their contact information, and follow up politely after 1-2 weeks. Sign in to unlock full contact details.
Payment depends on the company: Multinationals (Shell, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Seplat, etc.) often pay stipends. Indigenous firms & SMEs may offer little or no payment. Use the filters on our organizations page to find paid opportunities. Either way, the experience and skills gained are the most important.
Consider: Course relevance (affects your SIWES grading), allowance/stipend, location (transportation, accommodation, safety), company reputation (verify CAC registration), and work conditions (hours, weekends, holidays). Make sure the company aligns with your field of study.
If you find yourself with limited tasks, use the period to: Learn online (YouTube, Coursera, LinkedIn Learning), build personal projects, volunteer within the company to gain more exposure, and network with staff for mentorship. Take initiative and ask for projects.
For university students: SIWES I is usually 3 months (mostly for engineering students at 300 level), and SIWES II is 6 months (usually at 400 level). For most other fields, students typically do a single 6-month SIWES programme. For polytechnic students, SIWES can last 4-12 months depending on your programme.
